TV vs VT
December 22, 2006
Venice is among those defining 2007 in terms of video, the more important definition is what’s the difference between TV and VT?
Fashion CEO asks Mike…so what is it exactly an online user controlled television?!
I’ve got this one…Walk over to your screen, use your remote to click on what you want to watch, watch it.
There are no channels to click through, no scheduled broadcast. Wanna watch Tyra, click Tyra, click subject or date, scroll through previews, click to watch. Oh and maybe this is your point, television is something you watch using that old dusty remote with all the buttons on it. Yep its still around, it sometimes provides a live news feed. Everything worth watching and that’s everything is in the great jukebox in the sky (you think the record companies loved this idea…wait for it…wait for it) everything is searchable, accessible and controlled by the new network programmer/anchor and producer…as Time says…YOU.
Venice is just the beginning and Yes Doeboy you can bet the farm, I have…iTV, venice project, tivo acquisition, etc, etc…..2007 is going to be the year for broadband tv …that’s for sure.
Where I think we are going to see major VT terraforma is at the platform and UI | UX layer. Content, always King, will take a brief nap as user generated media splashes into prospective and professionals and co-producers seek balance while the audience learns collaborative mediation hopefully with the help of relationship architects that can build with gesturebank and attention support. Search will be replaced by discovery and discovery engines will drive audience experience and relationships with each other and the content/services/systems. Who among us doesn’t think video search sucks ass? It’s 99.6% wimpy repurposed bullshit. Really simple syndication will describe a low impact workable framework not a standardized branded schema for those dumb enough to brand it (rss’d it as opposed to I get it won’t cut it). I hope cable boxes give way to a stripped down modem that propagates broadband wireless and organizes communities of disparate wireless devices. Another TV:VT guess for 2007? Slingbox will fuse into an ill-fated wireless cable remote control app then realize they’re in the broader iptv business, manage interaction and thrive. Finally, VT will hopefully fade into a rich internet soup and both video and all the video tech become transparent in a new matrix goo or blue glue or whatever webified moniker becomes the nom de jour.
Oh and Venice…good luck, you’re destined to be the new improved TiVo 2.0…whopee, what a fucking quantum leap! Maybe now I can change the channel on my phone, the same way I change the channel on my laptop. Yo…Channel this!
